Important update from Papyrus
Papyrus can confirm that Emma Mifsud and Charles Turner of Opus Restructuring & Insolvency have been appointed Joint Administrators of the charity.
The appointment follows an extended and extremely difficult period in which the charity’s Board of Trustees and senior management explored every available option to secure Papyrus’ future. This included changes to its operating model, cost reductions and consideration of whether services could be transferred to other organisations, to protect the services provided.
Despite these efforts, and against a backdrop of rising demand, increased trading costs, and a reduction in reliable funding across the sector, the Board concluded that the charity was no longer able to continue operating in such a climate, taking the decision, to appoint insolvency practitioners in line with their fiduciary duties.
For almost 30 years, Papyrus has worked to prevent young suicide in the UK through its campaign work, education, training and direct service provision. We are enormously proud of that work and of everyone – staff, volunteers, trustees, supporters and fundraisers – who has contributed to it.
The Joint Administrators recognise the charity’s significant contribution and the dedication of its staff, volunteers, trustees and supporters. Their focus will now be on managing the charity’s affairs through the administration process and supporting an orderly closure. Further information will be provided as and when it becomes available.

Yes, Papyrus has closed and has been placed into Administration, an insolvency process managed by independent Insolvency Practitioners from Opus Restructuring & Insolvency. It is possible some services, wherever possible will be transferred to new partner(s) and more information about that will be made available if and/ or when appropriate.
The Board of Trustees have had no choice other than to place Papyrus into Administration in view of its insolvent position arising due to inadequate income available to meet the level of demand on the Charity’s resources.

Yes, the possibility of some services being transferred is actively being explored and updates will be provided as appropriate when it is possible to do so.
The Joint Administrators will be responsible for reviewing the funds currently held by the Charity with a view to establishing how and for what purpose(s) those funds are held, for example whether they are ringfenced or held on trust for a specific purpose, with a view to establishing who is properly entitled to such funds or whether they are held for the benefit of the Charity in an unrestricted way.
Regular donations to Papyrus should now cease. Please make appropriate arrangements to terminate any regular donations via bank accounts or otherwise.

Planned events will be cancelled unless an alternative provider/ partner can be identified to take forward any specific events, adapted as appropriate. Similarly, training and partnerships carried on under the Papyrus name will no longer take place but may be run by an alternative provider. Personal data will continue to be held securely and dealt with in accordance with data protection legislation (GDPR) under the management of the Joint Administrators. Where or when it is appropriate to do so, data will be securely destroyed.

The Joint Administrators’ initial review indicates that funds received by Papyrus before it entered administration were used in the ordinary course of the charity’s activities. This included delivering its charitable services and meeting the associated fundraising and operational costs.
Fundraising platforms, including JustGiving, have been notified of the charity’s administration and asked to close fundraising pages associated with Papyrus.
JustGiving has confirmed that donations which had not already been transferred to Papyrus will be returned to the relevant donors. We are yet to receive direct response from the other platforms regarding the closure of Papyrus’ pages and the return of funds they held. Please therefore contact them directly if you have a specific query regarding recent donations and we will update further should we receive further direct updates.
Overall, and as part of their statutory duties, the Joint Administrators are undertaking a review of the charity’s financial affairs and the circumstances leading to its administration.
Unfortunately, Papyrus is no longer able to deliver training sessions because the charity has ceased operations.
If you have paid for training that has not taken place, please email . You will be provided with information about how to register a claim in the administration for the amount you paid.
The Joint Administrators are separately exploring whether any of Papyrus’ former services or activities could be transferred to alternative providers. There is no guarantee that a transfer will be possible, and this does not mean that a training session previously booked with Papyrus will proceed.
