John Thompson joins Opus Business Services Group as a Partner for Opus Business Advisory & Turnaround with over 25 years’ experience of business management, finance and company turnarounds.

In the current climate, customer needs, advances in technology, compliance and employee expectations have all combined to make the running of businesses increasingly demanding for the owner manager. Opus Business Advisory & Turnaround was established to help existing management teams create real value in growth potential businesses as well as turnaround support for underperforming companies.

Separate from the Restructuring & Insolvency Advisory Team

Whilst part of a Group that supports businesses in operational and financial challenges throughout the business life cycle, John’s team is very different from the advisory team within Opus Restructuring & Insolvency. The restructuring advisory process looks to identify the best financial outcome. This can typically involve the selling or liquidation of the business and/or its component assets or effect a forced conversion of debt levels to balance cash-generating capabilities. However, a turnaround looks to improve a company’s position.

John explains,

“Opus Business Advisory & Turnaround is very much about the turnaround, revitalisation and transformation of businesses.  We initially work with organisations to help identify and overcome any underlying barriers to growth. Poor cashflow is often a feature here and this part of the process may include the introduction of increased and/or new funding where needed.  We then work with the team to develop a robust platform for growth that seeks to create some real new value over the medium and longer term. It’s not a prescriptive process, and whilst of course there are guidelines that we follow, the initial analysis and eventual structure of the growth plan are different in every situation.”

Steve Parker, Group Partner at Opus, adds

“We wanted to clearly differentiate between our restructuring & insolvency and turnaround advisory services. John’s successful business background, and first-hand experience of building and successfully selling two businesses clearly achieves this.”

Supporting Business Advisory & Turnaround Clients

Supporting customers nationally, Opus Business Advisory & Turnaround delivers services from its offices in London, Croydon, Milton Keynes, Birmingham and Liverpool. The team works with ambitious organisations to address issues that are stifling business growth and assist in the development and implementation of new strategies to achieve Stakeholder aims. This often includes the introduction of new or additional finance. Specialities include business coaching, mentoring, value creation, business finance, strategies for sustainable growth, business transformation, company turnaround, mergers and acquisitions, asset based lending, invoice finance, asset finance and franchising.

John concludes,

“Being independent yet part of a group means that Opus clients have access to a wide spectrum of services under one roof. This means we can help them build their businesses as well as support them in challenging times.”
